Overview
The Sierra Maestra airport is a small-size international airport located 12 km (7 mi) from the city of Manzanillo in the southeastern province of Granma.
It serves the cities of Manzanillo and Bayamo and is a gateway to the Sierra Maestra (the largest mountain range in Cuba) where are located three large national parks: Gran Parque Nacional Sierra Maestra, Parque Nacional de Turquino, and Parque Nacional Desembarco Del Granma . It serves also the south coast region where we can find the only all-inclusive resort of this province, the Club Amigo Marea del Portillo (in the small village of Marea del Portillo, near Pilon).
The airport has one terminal and handles both domestic and international flights coming from Canada. In order to be able to cope with more traffic and aircraft of different types, the airport has been completely remodeled. The airport expansion program included lengthening the runway from 2,400 to 3,000 meters and the second coating of asphalt. The airport also acquired mobile stairways, baggage handling equipment and other facilities essential for a modern airport terminal to provide fast and highly reliable services to its passengers, as well as the installation of up to date air navigation and air traffic control facilities, and the training of the highly qualified personnel that meet International Civil Aviation Organization's standards.
There’s no jet bridge, mobile staircases are used for embarking and disembarking passengers onto the tarmac. For more information about this airport, facilities, formalities, arrivals/departures, and photos, please click the links in the right menu.
